SB3 Irish Nationals
Date 18/09/2009SB3 Nationals – RCYC
Day 1 of the SB3 Ireland National championships today kicked off Roches Point, with a light forecast predicted for the weekend, we are set to see some interesting racing amongst this very competative fleet.
A total of 45 boats have travelled from all corners of Ireland to compete in the event. Curradinghy Sailing is been represented by it’s SB3 Race Team where out in force for the event, although dusting the cobb webbs off the boat the day before the event, some may say that the team where slightly out of training.
With a building Easterly breeze, the fleet started the 1st race in a light 8 knots and slack tide, with the breeze slowly died off throughout the race which meant that concentration and observations where the name of the game, with a couple of back calls and an incident at the windward mark, the team dropped from a respectable 6th to 17th by the finish.
With the breeze continuing to drop, the course was shortened and shifted more to the South East where the breeze had started to blow, with an increasing breeze off the start, the team amongst other teams, went for an early tack to work the middle of the course. The breeze slowly died again throughout the race and a flooding tide saw another factor of the equation. The team took full advantage of the patches of breeze working their way down the course to make their way towards the front. After a good gybe drop, the team saw themselves sling shot into 1st position and holding the position to the finish.
